Proper Instructions for Using a Fire Blanket

A fire blanket is primarily used to control small fires in their early stages, such as cooking oil and grease fires, or to wrap around a person whose clothing has caught fire. Follow these steps when using it:

1. Quick Access: Pull the two hanging straps firmly and quickly to remove the blanket from its pouch.
2. Self-Protection: Hold the blanket by the straps or upper corners. Wrap the upper edges around your hands and forearms to create a protective shield against flames and heat.
3. Approach Carefully: Move calmly toward the fire while holding the blanket in front of your face and body as a protective barrier.
4. Cover Completely: Carefully and gently place the blanket over the flames or the burning person from top to bottom. Do not throw it forcefully, as this may splash burning oil or cause the fire to spread.
5. Disconnect the Power or Gas Supply: If the fire is caused by a stove or electrical appliance, disconnect the power supply or shut off the gas valve immediately after covering the fire.
6. Leave It Until Completely Cool: Do not remove the blanket until you are certain that the fire has been fully extinguished and the affected area has completely cooled. The blanket should normally remain in place for at least 30 to 45 minutes. Removing it too early may allow oxygen to reach the fire and cause it to reignite.

Do not attempt to test, unfold, or handle the fire blanket unnecessarily for the following reasons:

Material Composition

The blanket is made from woven fiberglass, which contains millions of extremely fine particles and fibers that are invisible to the naked eye.

Health Risks of Fiberglass

When the blanket is unfolded, rubbed, or tested in open air, these fine fibers may become airborne.

• Inhaling the fibers may cause severe respiratory irritation, coughing, and throat inflammation.
• Contact with the skin may cause intense itching, a stinging sensation, and skin irritation or dermatitis.
• Contact with the eyes may cause serious irritation and possible eye injury.

Damage and Loss of Usability

Once the blanket has been opened and unfolded for testing or demonstration purposes, it may be difficult to fold it correctly and return it to its pouch in a way that ensures quick and easy removal during an emergency. It may also become contaminated or damaged.

Note: A fire blanket is a single-use emergency safety product. Its condition should be checked by visually inspecting the outer pouch, ensuring that it is undamaged and securely installed in its designated location. There is no need to open or manually test the blanket.
